How Anime Ruined Me
The first time I was exposed to Anime was when I was 10 years old and saw Lupin the III The Castle of Cagliostro and Spirited Awayat my (at the time) best friend's apartment. Both of those films amazed me at an age when all the animated media I had seen up to that point utterly bored me (with the exception of Batman and Spider-man related shows). When I was 11 I bought the first 3-1 volume of Naruto at OzComicCon and it changed my life. After that I was an avid consumer of anime and manga. But this page is about anime so I'll try and stick to that.
Naruto and DragonBall were the first anime franchises I tried to watch, with little success for either show. I didn't know about pirate websites, I didn't own any dvds, and Youtube was confusing to navigate for me at that age. I wouldn't actually start watching any anime series properly until I was 14 with Evangelion, where I had a great gay awakening through the incredible Kaworu and Kaji.
In the years since, I've watched a decent amount of anime (Gundam, First of the North Star, Macross, Cowboy Bebop, etc. My love for anime would eventually lead me to do what many weebs do; Learn Japanese. But unlike many weebs, I did what they couldn't do; actually learn it. And also go to Japan at 15 for an exchange program.
